The chuppah symbolizes the new home being
formed by the bride and groom.
The presence of parents and attendants
under the chuppah which illustrates that
they are not being married in a void, nor will
they build their future home in isolation.
Rather each come with family and close
friends who lend stability and strength to the
marriage. The presence of family and friends
under the chuppah also allows the couple to
establish the tradition of hospitality
(Hachnassat Orchim) in their new home.
This is reminiscent of Abraham’s
dwelling open on all sides so that visitors would always know they were welcome.
